'I carry my light within me'

a few words by Sally Bamber about her work

I did 30 years of full-on city life in London, then came back to the countryside 18 years ago, to allow myself to paint, but still it remained evenings and weekends, oils and grand ideas, portraiture, always charcoal, then watercolour and the patience and stillness of plants for subject matter.

From tight drawings to looser masking and painting, showing the flowers in my garden at Natterjacks in 2010. The Energy of Flowers at Brantwood in 2015, with the subtext of suspend disbelief, sitting in the field and gardens to draw, quietly with nature, and nature comes to me as slow worms pop their heads out to see whose sitting there so long, butterflies land and beetles walk calmly across my paper. Then to working with Medical Herbalist Sarah Atkinson to create Herbal Chronicles, which we launched at Brantwood in 2021, and a new outlook on life.

During the last five years of ‘births’ my mind and body have been challenged. Working with our architect son Joe Bamber we have built ourselves a stunning home in a beautiful environment with amazing neighbours, we named the house Speckled Wood after the common butterfly prevalent in Witherslack, this is my sanctuary. My daughter Megan with her partner Luke have brought three fabulous children into this world and our son Joe delivered his own son in February this year. My status in this world evolved!

What you have here at Cartmel Ground Gallery is elements from these years.

What I am working on now is the Speckled Wood garden as it takes shape and burst from the building and construction yard it was for five years! The garden enables me to step out of the shadows into the sunshine, to step forward in strength and illuminate the path ahead for myself and this I love.
